This philatelic design contest, organised in support of the initiative “2010 : European year for the fight against poverty and social exclusion”, took place from September 2009 to February 2010 and was organised in partnership with NGO Chrëschtlech Solidaritéit International (CSI), Caritas Luxembourg and the ministries of National Education and of Family (also in charge of Cooperation). This contest was designed for primary school students (the specific theme was “The fight against povery in developing countries”) and for students in secondary schools (the specific theme was “The fight against poverty in industrialised countries“).
For each of two age categories, the first prize was 1,000 € and publication of the design in the form of a postage stamp.

In the primary school category, the winner is : Timothy CLEMENT, living in Bettel, 5th grade

In the secondary school category, the winner is : Cinthya GONCALVES GUERRIRO, living in Differdange, Lycée Technique des Arts et Métiers, Class T1AR3

Founded in 1989, “Chrëschtlech Solidaritéit International” (CSI) is a non-governmental organisation approved by the State which supports the most disadvantaged people in developing countries, notably in the field of education. Since 2010, cooperation with the Luxembourg State is governed by a multi-year master agreement “Entwécklung duerch Bildung”.
Development projects are currently underway in Vietnam, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Congo (RDC), Sudan, Brazil and Peru.
In addition to the support of development, CSI is involved with the defense of Human Rights and has developed since 2007 the “Mission: Stop poverty!” programme. It is by using entertaining games that children are familiarised with the daily life of inhabitants of developing countries and are encouraged to reflect and to act together. Starting with the principle that everyone can contribute to a fairer world, CSI sensitizes youth by means of workshops and contests (such as the one by P&TLuxembourg) in fundamental education classes. On 14 December 1932 the “Fédération Luxembourgeoise des Oeuvres Catholiques de Charité” (Katholischer Luxemburger Caritasverband) was created, federating lay communities solidly entrenched in Catholic life in Luxembourg. Over the years, Caritas has focused on activities for and with children, families, the elderly, migrants, refugees, and the homeless. The internatonal dimension was confirmed in 1949 with the creation of Caritas Internationalis, of which Caritas Luxembourg is a co-founder.
Today, Caritas Luxembourg is involved with the welfare of men and women and, in particular, excluded, disabled, or impoverished people, no matter what their origin, age, nationality, philosophical or religious views are.
The 18 member associations of the Caritas family, forming the Caritas Confederation, are on the lookout for all forms of distress inside and outside the country, seeking to create synergies designed for effective action. Thus, “Caritas” represents a symbol of inspirational Christian social work targeting quality service in favour of people in distress.
The Caritas Luxembourg Confederation represents its members according to their common interests, supports the social work policies provided by them, and seeks to promote innovative social work.
