This fourth and final instalment of special postage stamps traces a melodious history of the most beautiful pipe organs of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and is part of a special series, which began in 2006.
Philharmonie
The organ of the Luxembourg Philharmonie is an instrument that wants to be universal, combining different styles, notably German, French, and Anglo-American elements, and reconciling tradition and innovation; a beautiful sight is the presence of two consoles, one with mechanical traction (in a window) in the middle of the casework turrets, the other with electrical traction.
Despite its ambitions of universality, the instrument cannot deny its symphonic roots, evident as much from how it was created as from how it is used: a hall organ and yet, by definition, a concert organ, it must be at the same time a soloist and a “tuttiste” capable of being in consonance, in “symphony”, with the other instruments of the orchestra. The impressive richness of its dynamic nuances ranging from the absolute discretion of its softest stops to the stunning force of the tutti (3 of its 4 keyboards are equipped with expressive boxes) is the result and the guaranty. Built by “Karl Schuke Berliner Orgelbauwerkstatt” in 2005 – the 4 exterior towers of the organ casework follow the contours of the number 2005 – this polyvalent instrument truly enriches not only the “Philharmonie” but also the organ heritage of the entire Grand Duchy.
