100 years of Rotary International
On 23 February 1905, Paul Harris founded what would become one of the most prestigious service club organisations: the Rotary Club. Although the initial goal was to allow its members to cultivate friendships and business relationships, the Rotary Club quickly became characterised by its philanthropic goals and promotion of professional ethics summarised today by the motto: Service Above Self.
Very quickly, the organisation achieved international success. After a century of existence, Rotary, now Rotary International, is comprised of more than 1.2 million members from 31,500 clubs in 160 countries. This includes 11 clubs and not less than 500 members in Luxembourg. Throughout its history, Rotary International has increased the breadth of its activities, notably by providing aid to refugees and to regions devastated during world conflicts, participating in the creation of the United Nations and even by influencing the laws of UNESCO.
It also distinguished itself by the launching of programmes combating hunger, improving public health, and for social and human development in the world. This initiative was launched by PolioPlus, a public health programme with a goal of eventually eradicating polio throughout the world. Good reasons indeed for dedicating to this organisation celebrating its centenary a postage stamp designed by an artist and member of the Esch-sur-Alzette Rotary Club.
