European elections 2004
In June 1979, for the first time, Europeans made their ways to the ballot boxes to elect a common assembly: the European Parliament. Today, through 626 deputies, 375 million Europeans are participating in the construction of Europe. Elected every 5 years by direct universal suffrage, the European Parliament has obtained, over the course of the years, steadily increasing powers and plays a growing political role in the European Union. Upon proposal from the Commission, and in codecision with the Council of ministers, it now adopts the majority of European laws.
From 1 May 2004, 10 new member States will become part of the European Union. Because of this, the number of European deputies will increase from 626 to 732. Then, from 10 to 13 June 2004, citizens from 25 different member States will elect for the first time their 732 members of parliament. With 10 new countries joining, the European continent is more united and the people can build their peaceful future in a community with values shared by all.
