World Mathematical Year 2000
Mathematics, one of the greatest intellectual inventions and one of the most enigmatic sources of wonder in terms of their applications in the real world, are unique in the history of science for being always modern and for using a language that transcends all cultures.
The International Mathematical Union (IMU) launched the idea for World Mathematical Year 2000 'WMY 2000'.
On an initiative of the Luxembourg Mathematical Society (SML), Luxembourg succeeded in obtaining the unanimous approval of the member states of UNESCO for a WMY 2000 sponsorship motion.
