Golden Wedding Anniversary of Their Royal Highnesses Grand Duke Jean and Grand Duchess Joséphine-Charlotte

On Thursday, 9 April 1953 at 10 o’clock at the Grand Ducal Palace, Mayor Emile Hamilius presided over the civil marriage of Their Royal Highnesses Hereditary Grand Duke Jean of Luxembourg and Princess Joséphine-Charlotte of Belgium.

At 11 o’clock, the religious marriage ceremony was celebrated at the Cathedral where there was a large audience of princes and other royalty.

After this moving ceremony, the Nuptial Cortege followed a route crossing the Pétrusse Viaduct, going down to the central train station, then coming up Avenue de la Liberté and crossing Adolphe Bridge before heading back to the Palace where they were greeted by a 101-cannon salute fired from Fetschenhof.

The afternoon was reserved for public celebration, including a Belgium-Luxembourg football match, military concerts, and a spectacular fireworks show at the « Trois Glands » at 21:30. To conclude the joyful day, a dance ball took place on the Place d’Armes starting at 22 :30.
