Christmas 2008
The Christmas Stamp this year, depicting a roe deer, is the work of well-known Belgian wildlife artist André Buzin. He is the artist for more than 300 postage stamp designs around the world.
The roe deer is a small animal (55-80 cm). It has on its rump a patch of hair, which is white in winter and yellowish in summer. Its muzzle is black with the edge of the lips outlined in white. Sometimes there is a white spot on the front of the neck called a serviette.
The roe deer has large ears, which allow it to hear sounds from a great distance. Its well-developed sense of smell compensates for mediocre vision, which is based on movement. Only the male, called a buck, has antlers. It is very quick and gracious and lives in mixed forests. It has no tail.
