European Capital of Culture 2007
Luxembourg and Greater Region, European Capital of Culture 2007
2007 will be the year of culture in the Grand Duchy. And, more particularly, of all cultures. Luxembourg and the Greater Region have the honour and pleasure of having been appointed, together with the Romanian town of Sibiu/Hermann-stadt, as European capitals of culture for 2007. With no less than five countries included in this large-scale event, there is no doubt that the combination of so many cultures will lead to a very interesting event.
For a rich idea, a rich programme. From 9 December 2006 to 8 December 2007, more than 350 events will take place in an area with over 11 million inhabitants. A common theme runs through everything : breaking down borders, whether they are physical, psychological, artistic, or emotional. The goal is to work together to shatter those visible or invisible barriers which surround us or which we raise ourselves. The challenge is a big one, to reveal to the public the richness of cultural expression which goes through all levels of society, and across all nationalities.
The postage stamps issued specially in honour of the cultural year will remind us, with every received mail, that we should not miss this event. Although we recognize the bridges built up between cultures, let us remain attentive and appreciate the cultural diversity that all of us, inhabitants of the Greater Region, experience daily.
