The Stamp Office (Office des Timbres)
When the first Luxembourg stamps were issued back in 1852, the “Stamp Office” did not exist. Creation and production of our first stamps were done by the “Direction Générale des Finances”, the Ministry of Finance of the time.
The “Office des Timbres” was only created in the mid- twenties and took over the production of the stamps but not the main stock, which was held by the “Enregistration Administration” until 1992.
In the thirties, a mail order service, one of the first of its kind, was set up in order to allow foreign philatelists to buy Luxembourg stamps. Philatelic notices, containing detailed descriptions of the new stamps were being issued by WW2.
After the war, more and more philatelists signed up to the newly created standing order service. In the early seventies computers took over the files managed so far with old fashioned addressographs.
In 1980 the P&T museum opened at the Rue de Reims. This museum was set up and managed by the Office des Timbres. It contained a complete collection of Luxembourg stamps. The museum closed in 1989 and moved to a better location at the Place de la Gare where it opened again in 1995.
In the summer of 1983 a special philatelic counter was opened at the Luxembourg uptown post office. It is still in operation today, and together with a similar counter in the P&T museum provides specialized services for collectors.
When the first Luxembourg phone cards were issued in November of 1990, “Telekaart” -collecting was at its summit. The Office des Timbres took over the making of the new cards and set up a mail order and subscription service.
After 1996 a new powerful computer system was created to serve our customers in a better and faster way.
Today the Office des Timbres has a staff of 15 people and handels more than 100.000 orders a year. Besides its philatelic issues, the “OT” holds the main stocks of Luxembourg stamps and phone cards.
