75th anniversary of the ACL
Automobile Club du Luxembourg ACL
When, in 1932, 84 members of Luxembourg intelligentsia decided to found the Automobile Club du Luxembourg, they probably did not imagine that they had just created an organisation that would become one of the most popular in the country.
This was because, in the beginning, this was a very exclusive gentlemen’s club whose members were the proud owners of a passenger automobile, an extraordinary luxury at the time. The principal activities of these gentlemen were tourism, gastronomy, and auto racing.
But the situation would quickly evolve with the appearance of the first cars designed for the mass market. In 1934 the first ”Volkswagen”, in 1947 the ”4 CV” of Renault and in 1948 the ”2CV” of Citroën resulted in the democratisation of the automobile.
In 1960 when the ACL launched its first assistance ”carnet”, the club already had over 16,000 members. From then on, its activities became more and more focused on providing assistance to automobile drivers. 10 years later, in 1970, the automobile road service, better known by the name ”service routier”, officially began. When, in 1972, this service became accessible throughout Luxembourg thanks to the creation of a central telephone exchange in Ettelbrück, the ACL saw its membership rapidly rise to more than 50,000. From that point on, activities to support ”automobile sport” became secondary, the focus was on providing assistance to members.
Today, the ACL with more than 160,000 members is active in the road service sector, handling more than 40,000 incidents per year, and also in the area of providing advice to tourists. It is the leader in the collection and distribution of information on road traffic. Its promise to ”come to the rescue”, in case of breakdown or accident, across all of Europe, has made it the close partner of Luxembourg drivers.
2007 will see, after 47 years of good and loyal service, the disappearance of the assistance ”carnet” in favour of a card with more benefits, ”the Europe card”, which also offers assistance even when travelling without a vehicle.
After 75 years of existence, the ACL has become an important player in the mobility of Luxembourg.
