Casa Luxemburg at Sibiu, Romania
In 2007 Sibiu, a Romanian town located in the historic province of Transylvania, is the European Capital of Culture. The symbolism is important because, for the fi rst time since the fall of the Berlin Wall, a town of the old Eastern Europe has been chosen to carry such a title. It shares this honour with Luxembourg, a town with which Sibiu shares strong historic links. In fact,the founding fathers of Sibiu, the Saxons, were originally from the region which includes the present territory of the Grand Duchy, which explains the almost organic link which exists between the Romanian town and the Luxembourg capital.
Luxembourg House was built on the first wall of « Villa Hermani » (Hermanstadt). During the restoration works, Gothic and Renaissance elements were found. The house got its baroque look in the 17th century. Between 1999 and 2003, the Ministry of Culture, Sites and Monuments Servie of the Grand Duchy financed the restoration of this house which, ever since, houses a cultural centre and a guest house. On 30 March 2004, the opening of « Casa Luxemburg » took place in the presence of Their Royal Highnesses Grand Duke Henri and Grand Duchess Maria-Teresa as well as several Romanian and Luxembourg dignitaries. The two stamps, from Luxembourg and Romania, both show the « Luxembourg House ».
