The centenary of football in Luxembourg
It was in 1889 when, following a trip to England, the Luxembourger Henri Baclesse first introduced in Luxembourg the activity of kicking around the “round ball”. However, it was necessary to wait until 9 December 1906 for the creation by Jean Roeder of the first Luxembourg football club: the “Football and Lawntennis Club” or “FOLA” of Esch-sur-Alzette.
Two years later, 13 teams were formed, as well as a national federation. The first national championship was held in the 1909-1910 season with 26 teams competing. Amongst the results that have marked the history of FOLA, one must recognise championships in 1918, 1920, 1922 and 1930, as well as the double Cup-championship in 1924. FOLA also won the Luxembourg Cup in 1923 and 1955, and played in the semi finals in 2002. In 2006, the club plays in First Division with a strong desire to be promoted to the Division of Honour starting next season.
