Sports

A healthy spirit in a healthy body. This adage could serve as the theme for this series of postage stamps dedicated to sport and to physical exercise. Swimming, alpine skiing, track running and football, activities representative of the diversity of practical sporting activities. 2004 was a year full of important sporting events as well as being the European Year of Education through Sport (see our issue of May 2004). Whether it was Euro2004 or the Olympic Games of Athens, hundreds of millions of people were able to enjoy competitions of the highest level that included the best athletes in the world.

However, apart from these special performances, there is love of sport and the need for everyone to keep in good condition and live a healthy life. In a fast-paced society where stress is a daily occurrence with which one must learn to cope, sport is a true breath of fresh air from which we must learn how to benefit. Moreover, physical exercise is one of the best solutions to the great illness of the 21st century in western society: obesity. Unfortunately, this societal problem is not only about adults. Children are also affected. Fast food, computers and game consoles too often replace regular, balanced meals and outdoor activities. Thus, it is the right time to return sport to the place it deserves, particularly among young people. Because, apart from the purely physical and psychomotor aspect, sport is also an agent of personal fulfilment and of opening up to others. It allows for the early development of team spirit in a world that is becoming more individualistic and it also develops a taste for challenge in a society that requires competition. In summary, get out your basketballs, your skis and your bathing suits! There are plenty of activities to enjoy and it is everyone's responsibility to find one that matches their needs and hopes.
