"Volleksbildungsbewegung"
In 1908, the association called “Volksbildungsverein” was created in Luxembourg City and extended so rapidly across the country that on July 31, 1910 a federation of popular education associations of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg was created. Its promoters were important personalities of the political and cultural life in Luxembourg as well as of the popular education movement. In 1910, this association became the Federation of Popular Education Associations of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.
This movement played an important part in the intellectual life of the country, calling upon Luxembourg and foreign lecturers in the areas of literature, arts, and sciences. This has led to the creation of a network of public libraries, the organisation of exhibitions, and the beginning of cultural tourism.
In the interwar period, the movement participated in political debates, fighting for freedom of expression and working for the democratisation of culture. However, it was banned and dissolved by the Nazi occupation during World War II.
Today, the Cultural and Popular Education Centre of Bonnevoie and the Cultural Centre of Differdange are similar to popular educational institutions of the first half of the 20th century, with the same cultural and educational ideals.
