Promoting research
The National Research Fund (FNR), created in 1999, is a central pillar of research in Luxembourg. The goal of FNR is to encourage and support researchers, to contribute to the development of public research in the Grand Duchy and to promote scientific culture.
Since 2000, the FNR has implemented research programmes.
The principal thematic programme, called CORE, is designed to reinforce the quality of Luxembourg research in a limited number of domains of socio-economic interest for Luxembourg. The structural programmes of FNR have a goal of promoting international cooperation.
The FNR mandate includes supporting the promotion of scientific culture as well as the training and mobility of researchers. It finances, for example, conferences and scientific publications.
Through AFR bursaries, which can be granted in the area of doctoral and post-doctoral studies, the FNR contributes to the development of human resources in the research domain in Luxembourg. The FNR is a founding member of the ProScience group which works for the promotion of scientific culture. Through events such as the Science Festival or the Researchers’ Night, ProScience contributes towards familiarizing the general public with research.
