Grand Duchess Joséphine-Charlotte concert hall
After years of construction, the Grand Duchess Joséphine-Charlotte Concert Hall, also called the Philharmonie, will be opened by a music festival from 26 June to 3 July. The Philharmonie is distinguished not only by the artistic diversity of its proposed performances, but also by an ambitious supplemental programme uniting artists and new forms of interaction with music.
A visionary edifice for music
Decorated with 823 columns arranged in a rhythmic pattern, the façade incontestably acts as the beacon for the newly renovated Place de l'Europe on the Kirchberg plateau. With its audaciously rounded forms conceived by the renowned architect Christian de Portzamparc, the Philharmonie is an exceptional centre and has three complementary halls available to host the most diverse musical events.
Holding up to 1,500 people, the Grand Auditorium combines the acoustics of a classical rectangular concert hall with the qualities of a Shakespearian theatre. A space both intimate and impressive holding 300 people, the Chamber Music Hall is bounded by elegant rounded partitions and an acoustic
reflector placed above the stage. The Open Space can hold 120 listeners and is a fascinating setting for very diverse musical events: experimental works, film and video, plastic arts, even interactive music workshops for younger people.
