The Fiftieth Anniversary of the Festival of Wiltz
Fifty years ago, a small group of men had the idea of bringing to life the unique site of the feudal castle of Wiltz by creating a European Open-Air Theatre Festival. The stage was set up in front of the grand staircase, and the gardens were the site of the amphitheatre, which can hold up to two thousand people.
From the beginning, this enterprise, unique to the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, stirred up a great deal of interest, and led the organisers to extend the programme to include more and more diverse types of events: chamber music, religious music, opera, symphonic music, ballet, jazz, children's theatre, folklore, and singing.
Since 1991 a daring new project has provided an elegant protective veil above the amphitheatre, which serves as an umbrella and, conveniently, improves the acoustics for events.
To celebrate its fifty-year history in an appropriate manner, this year the Festival of Wiltz presents a varied programme of high quality. From 28 June to 6 August 2002 renowned groups and artists will perform in the amphitheatre of the feudal castle.
