Marcel Reuland (1905-1956)
The eldest of family of eight children, Marcel Reuland was born on 16 March 1905 at Echternach. After a
classical education, he began, at first, commercial studies in Antwerp, then switched to advanced studies in philosophy and theology in order to earn a doctorate in Philosophy and Literature in 1934. He then taught in different schools of the country until his sudden death in 1956.
A true master of the Luxembourg language, Marcel Reuland was especially known for his successful theatre plays such as «D’Spill vun der Bidden», «Op der Kiermes» and especially «Gudd Noperen» (the main theme of this work, a plum tree on the property line of two neighbours, is depicted on the stamp) as well as «De Märtes a seng Wonnergei» which told the legend of the popular violinist of Echternach. He also wrote excellent poetry such as «Mëttesstonn» and «Wann de Summer geet».
In the series of postage stamps «FamousPeople 2005», P&TLuxembourg honours three exceptional Luxembourgers: the philanthropist Jean-Pierre Pescatore (1793-1855) ,the writers Marie-Henriette Steil (1898-1930) and Marcel Reuland (1905-1956).
