Charity stamps - Sports II
It has been a tradition since the middle of the 1920s: the Office des Timbres has issued at the end of the year a series of charity postage stamps. The 2005 edition is the second set of stamps dedicated to popular sports.
Besides their philanthropic goal, these stamps send a strong message to the general public and to young people in particular: sport, it is health! Advice that is good to remember in an era, alas, when television, game consoles and computers present every day a more tempting alternative to outdoor activities.
However, upon closer examination, today sport has, more than ever, many other worthwhile benefits. Apart from its physical nature, sport is also a “school of life”; where one can learn the art of bodily expression (figure skating), respect for others (judo), team spirit (basketball) or even self-improvement (tennis). So many good reasons to encourage participation in daily sports and to promote the several postitive benefits of doing so.
