The Rotundas
With « Luxembourg and the Grande Region, European Capital of Culture 2007 », the old rotundas of the Luxembourg train station have found a new use: a place of creativity and discovery, of passage and participation, they attract the public to the heart of the revitalised train station district. Built in 1875, the two domed structures combining stone, metal, and glass, with a diameter of 52 m and a total area of 5000 m2, have served for decades as a warehouse and maintenance workshop for the steam locomotives of the Luxembourg railroad.
In 1991, the rotundas were classified as national monuments by government order. In 2000, the Ministry of Culture made a call for projects and received an impressive number of proposals for the rotundas. The National Sites and Monuments Service was charged with renovating the buildings. From 2000, the restoration works of the fi rst rotunda have proceeded well. Above all a place of discovery and a centrepiece of the cultural year, the rotundas immerse spectators in an unexpected multidisciplinary and varied universe. In 2007, they will also host international productions that will be performed by localactors, as well as an ambitious programme dedicated to youth.
