EUROPA 2003

The 1920s (Auguste Trémont)

Auguste Trémont (1892-1980) is probably one of the most well-known Luxembourg artists thanks to his distinguished international career. He gained initial fame by illustrating 21 panels in the 1921 edition of "Rénert" by Michel Rodange.

His meeting in Paris with well-known wildlife painter Paul Jouve reaffirmed his own interest in this specialty. Initially attracted by the big cats, he designed these felines in a clearly expressed mood or movement: laying down, standing, walking, crouching, playing ... The poster that he created for the 3rd commercial fair in 1924, represented on this stamp, is a fine example.

However, it is as a sculptor that Auguste Trémont achieved his greatest fame. In fact, who has not been overcome by the proud lions guarding the entry to the City Hall of Luxembourg and who extol, for ever and ever, his glory?
