The Christmas market in the Place d’Armes

The Place d’Armes in Luxembourg, situated in the heart of the upper city in a pedestrian zone, is proud of its title of ”Salon de la Ville”, a title given to it years ago by writer Batty Weber. In front of the prestigious ”Cercle Municipal” building, which dominates the square, in the coolness of the shadow of the plane-trees, the terraces of restaurants and cafés spread out during the summer season.

From St. Nicholas Day until Christmas Eve, the beautifully decorated wooden stands of the Christmas market take over this very popular place. Passersby linger beneath the giant Christmas tree trimmed by the city government, do their Christmas shopping and warm up by drinking hot wine flavoured with cinammon and lemon or by enjoying the ”Gromperekichelcher” (potato pancakes), which are seasoned just as they were in the old days.
