50th anniversary of the Council of Europe
Council of Europe
On May 5th, 1999, the Council of Europe will celebrate its 50th anniversary. This date will remind us of the long course of Europe which has allowed to mute the severe legacy of a fratricidal war into a strategy for human liberty and dignity. The Human Rights Convention, worked out and implemented by the Council of Europe, belongs to its symbols. Unique in the world, this convention protects the individual rights of any person living in one of the 40 members states through the mediation of the Commission and the European Court of Human Rights.
