The illustrations used for the new stamp booklet feature closeups of subjects in nature that immediately give us an incentive to visit the ‘natur musée’ in Luxembourg-Grund.

Since 1996 the National Museum of Natural History has received visitors in three buildings along the rue Münster. Each building is dedicated to different types of activities. The St. John’s hospice houses the ‘natur musée’ with its permanent and temporary exhibitions. The educational building has three classrooms at its disposal for its activities designed to raise the awareness of young people to environmental sciences. The Scientific Research Center includes six office-laboratories and two warehouses for the collections. Here, a team of scientists, but above all volunteer scientific collaborators of the museum, study the specimens of the collections and look after scientific aspects of our natural patrimony.

The layout of the National Museum of Natural History allows a better presentation of the collections, thanks to ten permanent exhibiton halls, three temporary exhibition halls, a demonstration room, a conference room, two gardens, and a shop. Everything is perfectly arranged to receive visitors from Luxembourg and other countries.

The mission of the National Museum of Natural History includes raising awareness of environmental issues and contributing to the conservation of the natural patrimony. The exhibitions in the ‘natur musée’ were thus conceived as an interface between the public and the scientific community, a meeting place, a starting point for common projects.

The division of the subjects is no longer based on scientific disciplines, but on the questions which preoccupy the visitor and have encouraged him to visit the museum:

Who am I? — The biological human, a product of evolution, is continually questioned.

Where am I? — The pictures of our landscapes, the natural and cultural characteristics of the four regions of the Grand-Duchy answer the visitor’s questions.

Where do I come from? — The answer is in the past: fossils are the witnesses of life history, rocks allow us to examine the formation of the Earth, and star spectra help us determine when the universe was formed.
