Michel Rodange
Michel Rodange was born in Waldbillig on 3 January, 1827. At first a teacher in primary education, Michel Rodange later became a functionary in the Public Buildings Administration and devoted his precious leisure time to poetry. In 1872 he published the satirical epic "Rénert oder de Fuuss am Frack an a Ma’nsgrésst" ("Rénert" or the fox in human clothing). This work was written in the language of the country and well regarded for its detailed yet mocking analysis of the character of the Luxembourg people.
But the true value of the work of this caustic author was misunderstood during his lifetime: "Rénert" did not sell well and was ignored by contemporary readers. It was only much later, long after the author’s unexpected death in Luxembourg-Clausen in 1876, that his accomplishments were recognized and that "Fiischen" came to be considered as one of the best works in the Luxembourg dialect. Joseph Tockert wrote on this subject: "Like Dicks and Lentz, Rodange has entered the heaven of Luxembourg literature, and his poem "Rénert" will always be the first work in the Luxembourg language."
