METT HOFFMANN
Mett Hoffmann is known for his paintings, stained glass windows and mosaics. Some of his outstanding works are at the European Centre at Kirchberg, as well as in several churches. He was born on 15.1.1914 in Luxembourg and died on 11.4.1993 at Hollerich; he spent a large part of his life in Oesling, where he set up his studio at Bigonville. A member of the Grand-Ducal Institute and of the UNESCO council for plastic arts, he moved from an academic and figurative style of painting into abstract art like many of his generation of painters.
The Oesling countryside influenced continuously his works, which feature, apart from the tender green of the grasses, the brown of ploughed earth and the grey of slate. Among these rather sombre colours there is always a streak of sunshine with splashes of yellow or red, which are by no means put there by chance. Always flamboyant and luminous, they make a clear contrast with the more drab surfaces.
