European Investment Bank
The European Investment Bank (EIB), one of the fi nancial institutions of the European Union, was created in 1958 by the Treaty of Rome. Its headquarters are in Luxembourg and it has several branch offi ces in Brussels, Paris, Rome, Athens, Berlin, Lisbon, London, Madrid and in Cairo.
Its principal role is to fi nance European projects designed to contribute to the good social and economic development of the member countries of the European Union. In particular, the projects must help put the different EU countries at an equal level.
It can also intervene on its own accord outside the European Union, but with its own funds. About 15% of its investments are made outside the Union of 27.
