10th Anniversary of Eurosystème

Tenth Anniversary of Eurosystème

The European Central Bank (ECB) and the Central Bank of Luxembourg were set up on 1 June 1998 and have participated since 1 January 1999 in Eurosystème.

Eurosystème includes ECB and National Central Banks (NCBs) of the member States of the European Union (EU) which have adopted the euro. On 1 January 2008 these countries included Germany, Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Spain, Finland, France, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Malta, The Netherlands, Portugal and Slovenia.

The fundamental mission of Eurosystème consists of defining and setting up a monetary policy within the euro zone with a goal of maintaining the stability of prices.

The ESCBs, the European System of Central Banks, is made up of the ECB and the national central banks of the 27 member States of the EU.

Eurosystème coexists with the ESCBs as long as there are member states of the Union which are not in the euro zone.
