François Faber, champion cyclist and winner of the Tour in 1909
François Faber was born in Aulnay-sur-Iton (France) on 26 January 1887, the child of a French mother and a Luxembourg father. When he reached the age of majority, he chose Luxembourg citizenship and earned a living at first as a longshoreman. In 1906, he began cycling with a bicycle purchased on credit.
His height of 1.89 metres and his 90 kilos of muscles made him worthy of the nickname "Giant from Colombes". A well-conditioned athlete in excellent health, François Faber was one of the greatest champions of his era and won the Tour in 1909 after victory barely eluded him the previous year.
When war broke out in 1914, Faber enlisted in the Foreign Legion, and was killed in a battlefield in Artois at the Bonneval farm on 9 May 1915.
