Henri VII

Henri VII

Born around 1276 in Valenciennes, Henry VII married in 1292 Margaret of Brabant (died 1311 in Genoa), an alliance destined to reconcile two noble houses. Thanks to the power of his brother Archbishop Baudouin of Trier and of Pierre d’Aspelt, Archbishop of Mainz, Henry VII was elected Holy Roman Emperor in 1308. It was not until 1310 that he left with his family and several thousand men for Italy. After having received the crown of the Lombard kings in Milan, he had to crush an insurrection in Brescia where his brother Waléran (Walram) died.
Obliged to circumvent the Tuscan towns, he finally arrived in Rome for his coronation on June 27th in 1312 by three cardinals at St. Jean of Latran (Pope Clement V having remained in Avignon). But malaria and conflict between the Guelphs (the Pope and the House of Anjou) and Ghibellines (followers of the Emperor) weakened his forces, and he died at Buonconvento, near Siena, on August 24, 1313. Interred in the dome of Pisa, he left on Italian soil his dreams of universal monarchy.
