Firefighters

Firefighters

On 14 January 1883, 45 groups of Luxembourg firefighters founded the National Federation in Diekirch.
The federation, which is subdivided into 13 cantonal federations, had, at the time of its 125th anniversary, 183 groups, voluntary and professional, to which 9,000 fi refi ghters are affiliated.
In 1900 the CTIF (International Federation of Firefighers) was formed. Today, in addition to the founding member Luxembourg, the firefighters of more than 150 nations belong to this body.
A section for young firefighters, founded in 1965 at the time of the Hesperange congress, is now made up of 1,600 candidates being trained in first-aid services.
On the occasion of the centenary in 1983 in Diekirch, a first series of two postage stamps were issued.
The subjects were the historic “Maria-Theresia” pump and a modern fire engine.
The festivities for the 125th anniversary began in 2007 with the holding of the national congress and the CTIF congress in Mondorf-les-Bains. The official closing took place on 13th December 2008 at Niederfeulen in the presence of the Chief Benefactor of the National Federation, HRH Grand Duke Jean.
