Famous people
In the series of postage stamps «FamousPeople 2005», P&TLuxembourg honours three exceptional Luxembourgers: the philanthropist Jean-Pierre Pescatore (1793-1855) ,the writers Marie-Henriette Steil (1898-1930) and Marcel Reuland (1905-1956).
Jean-Pierre Pescatore (1793-1855)
Born in Luxembourg in 1793, Jean-Pierre Pescatore was a very colourful Luxembourg personality. A semi-literate volunteer in the Grand Army at the age of 16, tobacco manufacturer at 21, he left for Paris to become a banker under Louis-Philippe. Fortune smiled on him very quickly and he became very rich and was able to devote considerable resources to hunting for orchids and to viticulture.
Enriched, ambitious, and influenced by his times, Pescatore was not only known for his sense of charity, but also for having assembled an impressive art collection that included a huge number of objects, sculptures, and paintings which included several masterpieces.
Upon his death in 1855, Pescatore bequeathed his collection to the town of Luxembourg and made available the necessary capital to create a nursing home for the elderly (details of the facade are shown on the stamp). This was the origin of the Museum and the J.-P. Pescatore Foundation.
