Education through Sport

In support of Olympic Year 2004, the Entreprise des P&T organised from 22 September 2003 to 10 December 2003 the Grand Prix P&T 2003-2004 of stamp design for youths. This was a creative design contest with a goal of producing two postage stamps to be issued in May 2004.

The contest was opened to two age classes:

Age class A (primary schools) for children between 8 and 11 years of age reaching at least the 3rd class;

Age class B (secondary schools) for youths between 12 and 21 years of age.

The theme for age class A was the Athens Olympic Games. Each young artist was invited to illustrate his or her own vision of either the Olympic ideals in general or Olympic sporting events. The theme for age class B was Education through sport. Their works had to be included in the activities of the European

Year of Education trough Sport 2004 organised by the European Commission.

These activities related to highlighting sporting activities as an important element of education efforts rolled out not only at school but also in sporting clubs and at the family home. A jury composed of representatives of the sporting community, from education and from the Office des Timbres selected the best designs for each age group. Among the winning designs, two illustrations (one per category) were selected and have now been published in the form of postage stamps. The two winners are: Alexandra Bilska (10 years old) for age class A and Lynn Eyschen (16 years old) for age class B.
